RE: shipping my travel trailer across the country?

It can be expensive. I know a guy who had his towed by a licensed, insured and bonded (important) local transporter just 146 miles and it was $360. Like another said anyway you look at it unfortunately in todays world it will most likely be very expensive.

Hey John did you find out anything on the toad yet??? Hope it wasn't the worse case scenario! Just to set the record straight here for those who might not know. I have an awful lot of respect and admiration for Wacky (WTTCS) and they have a wealth of information available to those who ask as many of you do. I learned though along time ago not to argue with Wacky........................................................ ..................................................................... ..................................................................... RE: A few questions for those using Magic Jack

deeratpond! Magic Jack assigns you the number, not your cable company. You had to of gotten a number from Magic Jack if you ordered the service. Your cable connection only supplies an internet connection for Magic Jack.;) Glad you got cable. You better put a seatbelt on your chair after being used to dialup.:B;)You've already ordered MagicJack right?? Tony

WOW!! Whatta thread. Just tryin' to figure out what to do an' how to plan to get out there. Don't rightly feel welcome no more. Guess won't post no more ???'s on this forum. Post away.:) This thread is just a lot of differing opinions.:) We're all right actually so please do ask questions if you wish. There are a lot of good people here, some in this thread willing to help out. There's always different opinions in the definition of full-timing and we all know it, we just like to voice ours now and then.:B Everyone has good points and I myself appreciate them all, but don't run off. Everybody here is glad to help.;) What's import is what works for you and we all will help you achieve that if we can, so don't stop asking questions! It's how we all learned at some point or another.:) There's a lot of experience in the posters in this thread , all willing to help. We have to let our hair down now and then so to speak.:B

RE: A few questions for those using Magic Jack

We just ordered a Magic Jack also. I am really wondering if it's going to work Ok. I am ordering Cable internet in the next few days so we'll be able to try it out. Can we use our own local phone # or do we need to use one from Magic Jack?? Not sure, it depends on whether they have numbers in your area. They have a section in their FAQ's about it or you can chat live with a rep and ask. it will work fine with cable internet. Part of the initial ordering involves picking an area code and number if available. Didn't you pick something?? Can we receive incoming calls as well as making calls?? Yes you can receive calls just like your regular phone. We go to Florida in the winter.. could we use a local # here in Maine and receive FREE calling?? If your4 MJ number is from your home area in Maine then yest people could call you from their toll free. Example I had mine set up in my dad and kids town so when they call me it's a local call for them. Now you calling therm from Maine would be the same because with MJ you get unlimited calls in the US and Cananda This is such new technology that I'm hestitant to use it. Reviews on here seem OK. I've used it now for a few months. There have been a few rare occasions it had its moments, but it does work good and most of the time people think I'm on a landline telephone. I figured to the initial $50 or so it was worth the look ans so far so good. It has performed as advertised for me. I have only heard of a rare few that couldn't get it to work and it turned out to be some sort of hardware or software issue they had or too slow of a connection Thanks, Shirl & Rich I did a small review on it as I do most things I try and you can read it here. Good luck!!:) Tony

RE: Does it ever Occur....

I have no arguments Wacky. Sure there are differences. What we need to be cognate of is the fact full-timing means many things to many people. Not any single one of us is the right absolute way. All we can do is offer our own insights, not arguments. That accomplishes nothing. I look at it as we are all full-timers, some just do it differently as others. We don't need to argue about it. That won't change people s way of living.;) I remember once Googling "definition of full-time RV'er" I got tired after 40 pages and there were many more to read lol!! If someone does it different than me , more power to them. Lets not turn the thread into an argument. There shouldn't be any. We each do as we see fit individually. I like to see all the ideas and lifestyles. They may not fit my mold, but it's not my mold to they have t fit.:) I'll bow out of this one, but lets please not turn it into an argument. There's nothing wrong with additional posts or comments? We just don't need to argue over it. There will always be differing opinion, I realize that.

RE: Does it ever Occur....

Well put Wacky.:) We do need all views and sides for everyone to disseminate things to make a decision. In all fairness though full-timing means many different things to many people. Again there are NO rules to abide by only the rules we set for ourselves. All we can do is offer out view of what that might be like in our own unique situations knowing it doesn't fit all. I kinda fit into Wacky's realm and Serena's realm with a squeeze here and there and many don't. Like Wacky has even said, they started out in a pickup camper and I even see that today so it can be done, it just goes back to individuality and everyone's situation is different. There surely is nothing wrong in pointing out the hazards and negatives ALONG with the positives on your specific full-time style of doing it.;) The way a person elects to full-time is up to them, not me.;)

RE: Does it ever Occur....

Serena can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what she's saying is full-timing doesn't make the world go away and we still even as full-timers have to deal with the day to day issues is all. Some that may even lead to yet another change even. The lifestyle is not all a Disneyland atmosphere as some have eluded. Then again it just may be for some no?. Either way we still have the same things to deal with in every day life trust me!;) How we do it is up to us individually. I think her point was good in that life doesn't change nor does the reality in becoming a full-timer, just the way we do things.;) For me attitude plays a huge role. I've met a many in campgrounds who have come to meet me and were ready to head straight to the RV dealer, buy a rig and drive off never to return leaving the day to day of life behind for a carnival atmosphere giving no thought to it lol!:B Well obviously I had to do some educating and make some recommendations and suggestions lol! If they then chose to do so then so be it.:)

RE: Does it ever Occur....

Whoa. Look what a little insomniac pondering brings me, lol. My attitude is not good, I should seek other forums, quite petting the sweaty things, express the differences in experience more politely, and be nicer to the newbs. I think I was only saying that it's a very different experience, and as you go along it gets even more different than that. Heh - WTTCS, I think you called it. I just made the classic error of trying to describe this end of the elephant to the blind guy on the other end, and he's pretty sure I'm wrong. :) Serena I think you presented a good reality look at things if one caught on, but there are different reality's because we are all different. All experiences are noted or should be. We all at some point started our journeys with enthusiasm and excitement and like me and finally settled into the lifestyle. In my case the moon shining through a vent can be a positive thing and rarely care if it's dirty, only when I can't see the moon through it.:) I personally have been through some issues in recent time sthat I've come to enjoy all those things again. So I guess I ask for us who've been around the "curve" we should not offer the positive, negative and guidance to others? Sure. I and many have never divorced ourselves from the world or reality. Reality has been with me every mile I've traveled and every place I've lived. Remember we all see things differently. What excites one may not another. Both ends of the spectrum need to be presented. In the end everyone meets the objective they were after......or they didn't. Reality has always traveled with me. It does with everyone whether they like it or not. Reality is what you and I as individuals make it. I try my best to make it positive. The alternative is not something I desire. You have a valued opinion as well as us all. We just have to disseminate it all and decide if the lifestyle is for us or not. As you elude to you must look beyond the new gadgets and spreadsheets. We all see life differently. For some the moon through the vent shines for a long time. Some not. In my case it does and continues to do so. All facets and experiences need to be presented so others can make their own decisions. Your was a good view for those who understood it, but those who haven't been there yet and want the details should be given them. Good and bad. The questions no matter how serious, simple or clouded will be endless, always. That's part of human nature.;) Obviously there is more to this lifestyle than new toys and gadgets and thrill. Most find out as they proceed. I had a dream and lived it and still do. Others haven't. There is no right or wrong, but reality goes with us no matter where and how we go. As you said it can't be dodged. Those who think differently will find out early on. Nobody's blind.;) Some just see things differently, but the other end of the elephant needs to be presented.:B.;) I personally keep my reality in check and stay happy by not looking at the elephants "beehind", but no matter where you live or how the elephant will rear it's other end and you have to deal with it..:B Bottom line we all do what makes us happy and when we're no longer happy? We as humans move on to something else in search of a new happiness. In my case it's easily done with a road trip.:) I appreciate everyones views.:) We should all be eager to help others either way. They can then make their own decisions. Your way, Wacky's way or my way is not the correct way. It's what suits us all each individually. My dad always told me growing up..."son do NOT live up to the expectations of others. Live up to your own".;) Actually if you think about we are ALL right and nobody is wrong.:)

RE: Does it ever Occur....

Serena, since I agree with your post 100%, our voice means little to the ones who do not , nor can comprehend what you are trying to say. Perhaps that is our problem, that we do understand, but cannot communicate it to the others that do not understand the message. Keep in mind, that if the receiving ear doesnt like the message, attack the messenger! Ok Wacky...give it a try.;)

RE: Does it ever Occur....

when you're hanging out here that the vast majority of posters are 'weekend warriors' so to speak, and that their concerns are fairly far removed from those of a fulltimer? No, not at all. A vast majority of the posters here are already full-timers. For the ones who aren't they are seeking information, planning and other researching needs or just out of curiosity. What better a place to ask a full-timing question? The lifestyle as mentioned above is a draw to many just out of curiosity as many only get to dream of such. It always will so you have to expect that. The full-time forum is not just for full-timers, but also those curious, planning and researching the lifestyle. Where would a better place be to go?? Personally I don't see that in as far as the vast majority of the posters here being weekend warriors as such with topics being far removed from full-timing. Everyone had to start somewhere. Most don't just wake up one day buy an RV and head out. Now I said most.;) I remember when I got serious about my move to the world of full-timing, I was a s green as the next guy. Where did I go for info? Right here and some of the other forums on RV.net. Without the info I obtained here as a weekend warrior lol, my transition would have been a wee bit tougher.;) I haven't met any that started out with all the knowledge and baseline questions???

RE: A few questions for those using Magic Jack

Two thing regarding MajicJack and using an aircard.... 1. The speeds you describe (similar to satellite) will usually result in quite a lag and the end result is usually a choppy call. Now if your aircard is evdo broadband and you get speeds of 1 MBPS+ or so it should work fine. I have found with speeds in the 700-800 range that VOIP (MajicJack specifically) doesn't work well. At least for me. Very marginal. 2. Keep in mind that aircards now have a 5 GB per month cap, except AllTell which was bought by Verizon recently so I would expect that it will too soon. VOIP calls use a pretty good amount of bandwidth so if you make a lot of calls it can eat away at your bandwidth helping you to hit the cap much faster. In Verizon's case they charge you for going over the cap and it can be very costly. I've used it for months now and if you just use it for when you don't have cell service and on park wi-fi systems you might get by, but using it for your primary phone might be a bandwidth problem if you are on the phone much and using an aircard. * As mentioned above if your account was grandfathered (Verizon only) and the 5 GB cap does not apply to you then you're OK. I would still be concerned with the speeds you mention though. I did not have good results in the 700-800 speed range at all. Tony

RE: So you still want ot go fulltime? Are you nuts?

Dianne, myself and many others trailertraveler have always maintained this lifestyle is not for everyone. Everyone is different in all aspects of life. I have seen both sides presented and very well quite frankly. I think once you've been around the forum here a while you'll see that. EVERYONE based on their needs, finances, desires and all that goes with it needs to research and plan before jumping into it if they desire like anything else you do in life. For ME the lifestyle has proven much cheaper than conventional living, whereas it may not for others. it goes back to us all being individuals with individual needs. The term full-trimer is such a broad term anyway as there are many ways it may apply to some where it may not to others so ya see there are so many variables involved, but as for the negatives not being presented here in the for? Oh yeah they have and continue. It helps people decide what's right for them, not me. There are no set rules, but only your own. Hang around a while you'll see both sides of the fence presented.;)

RE: So you still want ot go fulltime? Are you nuts?

We live the result, we can live much cheaper fultiming as in a S&B. As one poster said they could not afford ti retire in their S&B. We agree with that. BUT for some, they also have to account for what they are giving up to do it. You have to also WANT to live in 400 sq ft AND not just for the cost factor. You also have to be happy doing your thing. well put.:)
